Strengthen Your Bones. Reclaim Your Confidence.
Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and brittle, increasing the risk of fractures from minor falls or even simple movements like bending or coughing. It’s often called a “silent disease” because bone loss occurs gradually and without symptoms—until a fracture occurs.
At Dr. Phillips Medical Wellness Center, we provide a personalized, evidence-based approach to screening, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis to help protect and strengthen your bones.
What Causes Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis occurs when bone loss outpaces bone formation. Risk factors include:
- Aging (especially after age 50)
- Hormonal changes (menopause, low testosterone)
- Family history of fractures
- Sedentary lifestyle
- Vitamin D or calcium deficiency
- Certain medications (e.g., corticosteroids, anti-seizure meds)
We assess bone health using DEXA scans, labs, and symptom history. Hormonal health and nutrition are also evaluated to uncover root causes.
Medical Therapies:
- Bisphosphonates (e.g., alendronate, risedronate): help prevent bone breakdown
- Denosumab (Prolia): injectable medication that slows bone loss
- Anabolic agents (e.g., Forteo, Tymlos): stimulate new bone growth in high-risk patients
- Bioidentical Hormone
- Replacement Therapy (BHRT):
May be recommended for postmenopausal women or men with low testosterone to support bone rebuilding - Calcium and Vitamin D supplementation to support bone metabolism
- Thyroid and parathyroid evaluation if metabolic imbalance is suspected
We work with you to choose the safest, most effective treatment plan based on your unique profile.
Exercise Recommendations for Osteoporosis
Movement is medicine for bones. Our providers develop personalized fitness plans to help strengthen muscles and prevent falls while being safe for fragile bones.
Recommended Exercises:
- Weight-Bearing Activities
- Walking, hiking, elliptical machines
- Dance or low-impact aerobics
- 30 minutes daily is ideal
- Resistance Training
- Light free weights, resistance bands, bodyweight exercises
- Focus on posture, balance, and spine-safe techniques
- 2–3 times/week
- Balance and Core Training
- Tai Chi, yoga, Pilates (osteoporosis-safe modifications)
- Reduces risk of falls and improves stability
- Flexibility & Stretching
- Gentle stretching to maintain mobility, especially in hips, spine, and shoulders
Avoid high-impact jumping, deep forward bends, and twisting of the spine (e.g., crunches) if you have low bone mass.
We can refer to physical therapy or design a home plan based on your condition, mobility level, and lifestyle.
